A healthy body is the guest-chamber of the soul; a sick, its prison. This quote by Francis Bacon relates to my placement because part of physical therapy is working out. When you arrive at Health Quest, the first thing you do is ‘warm-up”. Doing this stretches out your muscles and get you ready for you specific exercises for you injury. In my Career Field Experience class i was required to write a journal entry on my blog. This blog post had three parts, the first paragraph was about that specific week and explain what exactly we did. Following this paragraph we would pick from multiple videos or articles to write about. Finally we would add a picture and click on post. In my opinion Career Field Experience is a unique class because it gave me an opportunity to realize how the real word is and it showed my a sneak peek of what my future could look like. For thirteen weeks, I drove all the way down gratiot and turned on to Harrington to arrive at Health Quest Physical therapy office. I observed many of the same patients receive treatment and watched them improve and heal. While reflecting on my overall experience in this class, I will outline the three employability skill of a physical therapist and how i have grown as a professional.
Positive Attitude/Motivation/Energy and Passion are skill you will need to succeed in any job. A positive attitude toward you patients is gong to make them feel good about what's going on with them. Motivation to help your patient is very important. Seeing you motivated to help them makes the client work harder and realize that they can accomplish anything especially with your help. Having a lot of energy is nice or the patient to see. They want an upbeat PT. If you aren't passionate about anything do, most importantly your career then why are you in that field? I always tried to smile or ask them questions on their progress that they have made. Planning and Organization is a big deal for this job. The PT for that patient has a list of exercises that the patient must complete in order for them to feel better. These change with the progress they make over the week they are here. Physical therapists have paperwork to fill out with each patient, they have to write down what they did and everything and how they did. Sometimes you have one patient after another and it's hard to remember everything that happened with that one specific patient. I would try and help them remember but I wasn't that much of a help. Teamwork I feel is very important. There is team work with you and the patient and also there are people there to help watch the client and make sure they are doing their exercises correctly and are doing the right ones when you are with someone else. The PT can only do so much. It's your responsibility to help yourself and do the exercises that are recommended for you. I would try and help out by getting the elastic bands for the patients or other tools they use. Interacting with others was one of my strengths that i showed at this experience. I always tried to have energy and have conversations with the patients. One of my weaknesses was problem solving . I don't exactly know that much about physical therapy so i couldn't really give my input on everything. One of the best moments of this job was watching the trainer as he helped this same lady every time I came. I saw all her progress. I enjoyed this experience while it last but I have come to realized that this job is not for me. This job saved me money in the future. If i didn't take this class I most likely would have taken classes for this specialty in college,. Doing so I would have realized this wasn't for me. This now gives me time to figure out a new plan for my future.

We only have one more week left with our co-op. I do not think I will be continuing this experience because I don't think I am interested in PT. I thought i was but this helped me realize that this is not or me. I have learned a lot about everything they do.
Passionate – Employees who are passionate about their job work harder than other and accomplish more. I think this one is the most important. I believe that I am passionate in earthing that I do. Even if I do not want to do something I try to put effort in. This week at HealthQuest Physical Therapy we weren't as busy. Tuesdays are usually the slower days but we make it work. We saw some new patients and a lot of the same people as last week. Most people usually go the same days each week so you will most likely see them again.
I procrastinate all the time. I always wait till he last minute to do assignments. Sometimes something goes wrong such as my computer not working and its just bad. I try and do my homework before the weekend because I wait till Sunday night to do it. |
